my customers are getting too comfortable

When a customer asked me this Tuesday if I played sports in high school, I was pleased with the inquiry, as I’ve always taken pride in (what I consider to be) my athletic appearance. I told him I played soccer at both a high school and college level, and he nodded, as though his perception of me was finally complete.

I was satisfied with our short conversation (if slightly uncomfortable on account of his stares) until, after a moment of silence, this customer added, “I thought so . . . because you’re built like a halfback.”

Excuse me?

If hearing you look more like a linebacker than a lady doesn’t give you a complex of some kind, I don’t know what will.

Flattery as an art form might officially be dead.
